Concord Point Light Havre de Grace, Maryland This is a good example of why I believe size has little to do with the attractiveness of a lighthouse. Even though Concord Point is quite small (32 feet), it is a beautiful structure with a rich history. The town of Havre de Grace is located on the Susquehanna River at the point where it empties into the Chesapeake Bay. Concord Point point overlooks the river as sailboats often dot the landscape on weekends. The town has done an excellent job of maintaining this area in a natural setting. Many people can be seen on a Sunday afternoon strolling the boardwalk that runs alongside the river banks. Built in 1827, all of the keepers of this lighthouse came from the same family, beginning with war hero John O'Neill. The nearby historic marker describes how O'Neill single-handedly defended the town against an entire British fleet of ships. There are plans to restore the keeper's house located just across the street. When I visited Concord Point, plans had been submitted by a developer to build a restaurant adjacent to the lighthouse, effectively destroying the scenic views. Let's hope the town fathers keep that from happening.
