Fort Penn, Delaware

The light seen to the left is often included in lighthouse guides due to its easy access and unusual appearance.  It has   been compared to everything from a spindly-legged spider to a New Wave oil derrick.   But this is the Rear Range light and no study of these lights would be complete without its neighbor down the road, the cottage-like Front Range light.

Range lights usually come in pairs, the rear light being higher than the front.   Ships navigating the nearby Delaware Bay in this case can line up the beacons to help navigate the channel.  Several miles from the shore, the Liston Rear light stands 175 over the waters.  The Liston Front, shown below, is right on the water and is 45 feet tall.  Both lights are currently in operation, although they are situated on private property.  The rear light was built in 1877, the front was added in 1906.
