Montauk Point Light Long Island, New York Having stood on this majestic bluff for over 200 years, this light is one of the most picturesque towers in America. It is located at the extreme east end of Long Island, where one can view the Atlantic Ocean to the right and Long Island Sound to the left. On a clear day, you can see the shores of Connecticut from the bluff high over the water. Montauk, named after an Indian tribe that once inhabited the area, was built in 1797 by order of George Washington himself. Generations of immigrants caught their first sight of America at Montauk Point. For many decades, it burned whale oil to produce the flame behind its first-order Fresnel lens. It was then refitted with an airport-style beacon that can be seen for over 20 miles in clear weather (see photo below). To reach Montauk, follow Route 27 to Montauk Point state Park at the far end of Long Island. The keeper's house contains an excellent museum and there is an outstanding cafe and gift shop nearby. There is a small fee to climb the lighthouse, but the view is well worth it ! |
