New Cape Henry Light Fort Story Virgina Beach, Virginia This lighthouse is not as well known as it's predecessor, but is stately nonetheless. It is one of the few lighthouses built of cast iron. Standing 156 feet tall, this tower lights the way for ships entering the Chesapeake Bay. It went into service in 1881 and boasts a first-order Fresnel lens. Fort Story is an active military base. Entrance to the base is just off Shore Drive in Virginia Beach. The Old Cape Henry Light is just across the street. The old light is open to the public for a small admission fee. This lighthouse -- New Cape Henry, is not open for tours. |
