At the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay, near Portsmouth, VA and the Norfolk Naval Base stands this stalwart caisson-style beacon.  Only a few miles away the first battle of the ironclads took place (Monitor vs. the Merrimack).

The towns of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News are bustling seaports and shipbuilding centers.  This light is one of several that guide vessels in and out of the area.  It was built in 1891 and was automated in 1954.

This lighthouse can only be viewed by boat.
