Lightship Overfalls Lightship Overfalls
Lewes, DE

Officially known as vessel LV-118, the Overfalls was the last lightship commissioned into service by the U.S. Lighthouse Service (now part of the Coast Guard).  It served faithfully for 32 years around various points in New England before being badly damaged near Boston Harbor in 1970.  It is 116 feet long and carried its beam atop a 25-foot high masthead.  The Overfalls was decommissioned in 1972 and subsequently obtained by the Lewes Historical Society.

Today it serves as a museum and is open to the public.  Lewes is a quaint little fishing village located right off U.S. Route 1 in southern Delaware.  From Lewes you can also take the Cape May-Lewes Ferry over to New Jersey where you can see Cape May Lighthouse, passing  the Delaware Breakwater and Harbor of Refuge lights along the way.
