Portsmouth, VA

Lightship Portsmouth was built in 1916 and was referred to as LV (Light Vessel) 101. It served to mark the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay until 1924, then was moved to mark the Delaware Bay until 1951.  It was used to makr various locations in the New England area before being retired in 1951.

This lightship, like the Overfalls and the Chesapeake, have been restored and turned into a museum.  Touring one of these boats is an excellent way to learn about life aboard a lightship.

To see the Portsmouth, take the downtown Portsmouth exit off I-264.  Make a left on Court Street, a right on High Street, and a left on Water Street.  Make the next left on London Street and you will see the ship in front of you.
