Sandy Point Shoal Lighthouse Sandy Point, Maryland This cassion-style light was built in 1882 to warn ships of the dangerous shoals near where the Chesapeake Bay begins to narrow at the northern end. The beacon rises 50 feet above the water, its automated light flashing ten times each minute. Without a boat, it is difficult to get a good shot of this lighthouse. It is easily seen, however, as you come across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. I took this photo from Sandy Point State Park using a telephoto lens. |
