Seven Foot Knoll Light Seven Foot Knoll Light
Baltimore, Maryland

Constructed in 1856, this the oldest of the screw pile lighthouses left.  For over 100 years it guarded the entrance to Baltimore Harbor, lighting the way with a fourth-order Fresnel lens.  The enclosure at the bottom was used to house livestock.  The outer covering is made entirely of 1" cast iron plates.

The lighthouse was retired and moved to Baltimore's Inner Harbor in 1988.   You can tour the inside, but there is not a lot to see.  The real story is on the outside placquard, which tells the story of how keeper John Steinese saved 6 crewmen of the tugboat Point Breeze in 1933, a feat that won him a Congressional Medal for heroism.
