Turkey Point Light Elk Neck, Maryland If not for its location, this lighthouse would be rather uninteresting. It was built in 1833 of masonry and stands 38 feet tall. Turkey Point is at the far north end of the Chesapeake Bay. Vessels traveling up the bay can go left at the Point to enter the Susquehanna River or right to head for the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal connects to the Delaware Bay. Although small, this lighthouse has the strategic advantage of being perched on a high bluff overlooking the Chesapeake. Elk Neck State Park is a game preserve loaded with deer and other wildlife. It is a 2-mile hike to the lighthouse from the parking area, but you are likely to see deer if it's the right time of day. It is over 100 feet to the water from the top of the bluffs so the view is spectacular. I plan to go back there with a blanket and my significant other, have a nice picnic, and watch the sun set over the Bay. |
