Fort Washington Light Fort Washington, Maryland This light is located along the banks of the Potomac River inside historic Fort Washington. Originally constructed as a bell tower in 1882, it was modified by the Army in 1901 to be able to support a lens at the top. The light stands 28 feet tall. Just off Highway 210 south of Washington, DC, Fort Washington is a wonderful place for a picnic or other gathering. The fort itself needs some repair done to the buildings, but it is interesting to view the batteries that once protected our nation's capital from invasion from vessels traveling up the Potomac.
